Striker Matías Abaldo has decided to break the silence after Gimnasia La Plata announced that he has been granted leave for an indefinite period due to health problems. The club's president, Mariano Cowen, expressed his concern for the situation of the Uruguayan player and stated: "Matías Abaldo is a 21-year-old boy, and we need to pay a lot of attention to these issues. We don't want him to end up like Morro García, who, due to some situation he couldn't handle, put a rope around his neck. All that support is helping me a lot."
Additionally, Cowen mentioned the possibility of Abaldo leaving Gimnasia to return to the club where he was trained: Defensor Sporting. According to the president, playing at home would be ideal for the player. It was reported that the Platense club acquired Abaldo's transfer on July 22, 2024, extending his contract until December 2027 with a salary increase.
In light of this situation, the option of Abaldo going to Defensor Sporting for a semester is being considered, allowing him to continue his treatment in his country and close to his family. Abaldo's performance at Gimnasia in 2024 included 24 matches played, 3 goals, and 3 assists in various competitions.
In an interview with Punto Penal, the striker expressed that he feels better and thanked the support received, from neighbors to football figures. It was also mentioned that the club is properly supporting Abaldo's process. On the other hand, the player's manager, Edgardo Lasalvia, mentioned on Radio Provincia that they are working on Abaldo's mental health aspect and that measures have been taken in this regard.
